Grand Parc de l’Ouest
Let’s dream about our Grand parc de l’Ouest
The Grand parc de l'Ouest is a concrete project aiming to create a Montréal 2030 that will have achieved its ecological transition with its entire population onboard. Having a surface area of more than 3,000 hectares (30 km²), the park has the potential to become Canada’s largest municipal park. It is an ambitious collective project that confirms the city’s will to protect natural environments and to preserve biodiversity. In the context of an ecological transition, the durability of our ecosystems contributes to Montréal’s increased resilience in facing climate change.
The park offers new points of contact with nature and includes all five nature parks of Montréal’s West Island: Anse-à-l'Orme, Bois-de-l'Île-Bizard, Parc agricole du Bois-de-la-Roche, Cap-Saint-Jacques and Rapides-du-Cheval-Blanc, in addition to various areas of interest located in boroughs or related municipalities.

0 comment4roberta_granshawover 3 years agoThe park will have created many bicycle paths and walking paths.
Creating and connecting more bicycle and walking paths between the parks , with wide pathways and secure lighting . In the winter , additions of ice skating rinks which are well lit at night would be a great addition.

After reading that the new public park was going to also include the existing agricultural lands, I thought that this could be a great oppourtunity to assist our local food banks by having a certain portion of the harvested crops go directly to Montrealers in need. Certainly, fresh produce for someone on a very limited budget would be much appreciated and would improve their health at the same time. It would also be nice for everyone to be able to plan a weekly trip to the park in order to buy fresh produce, like what we all used to do at Marche-de-l'ouest (i.e. a farmer's market) oh so many years ago.

I would love to see a project that is thought about holistically from a citizen's perspective in terms of leisure, safety and basic amenities (toilets & water) while protecting the eco-system (fauna and animals) as much as possible. An area where both nature and humans and co-exist. I believe the success of this project will be directly proportional with the number of people that use it on a regular basis. The development plans for this park must therefore be defined by the "activities" that the people will be doing in this park. Once we define this list of activities ... then we can see what is the minimal infrastructure needed to support these activities with minimal impact to the environment, nature and of course monetary budget. We can't do everything so we need a focus ... a mission. I think it should be all about staying active and connecting with nature. - We should accommodate, walking, hiking, biking, snow-shoeing, cross-country skiing, bird watching (lots of bird houses) and possibly dog-walking (dog park in a closed wooded area??). - marked trails with good maps and loops with distance in km and difficult level and estimated time.- The trail maps and information boards are extremely important because it encourages people to explore and challenge themselves. I'm saying this because the markings and maps at ie. Cap-St-Jacques, Mont Royal and others are really bad. If you don't know the place, and don't have a GPS, you will get lost and walk around aimlessly until you find your way. - I don't think we need another place for BBQs .... there are already many parks for this (i.e Cap St. Jacques and others). - The bike & walk paths would need to be all connected with overpasses on highway 40 and 20. - we need toilet and water facilities (even in the winter) - many of the paths should be asphalted (therefore allowing access to those with restricted mobility) and also ensuring that people stay on the path. They should be wide enough for walking and biking. - Lights would be great for night access. We must remember that in the winter it gets dark early and would be great if one could go out after work. - I don't think we should build a lake but maybe create a wood boardwalk over some of the marshlands like at Bois-de-Liesse Nature Park. I think if we focus on the activities it will give clarity to decisions.
