La Sainte-Catherine

La Sainte-Catherine : A major Montréal street being revitalized

Beginning in 2021, Rue Sainte-Catherine will offer you a brand-new experience in downtown Montréal!

The sidewalks of the future Rue Sainte-Catherine, with only one lane of traffic running between them, will be widened to provide more comfort for pedestrians. This major street will become a connector between the public spaces around it, including the square in front of St. James United Church, Square Phillips, Avenue McGill College, Square Dorchester and the area around the Guy-Concordia station.

As well, existing green spaces will be consolidated to increase plant cover and create cool spaces for Montrealers during the heat of summer. This major street, which can be made pedestrian-only depending on the time of year and events, will become one of Montréal's star sites!

The work is being performed in integrated fashion with the project partners, the Commission des services électriques de Montréal (CSEM), Bell Canada and Énergir. It is aimed at reconstructing century-old underground infrastructures and updating electrical and telecommunications services in order to transform Rue Sainte-Catherine into a modern thoroughfare that rivals those of the world’s great cities in the 21st century.

As of April 12, 2019, many of the new secondary water mains in the supply system are already in place. Work on the main water supply system will start in mid-April. Reconstruction work on public utilities (CSEM and Bell Canada) is also progressing well. Work operations aimed at improving Énergir’s gas network have are underway and will continue over the next few weeks.

Crews are on site, seven days a week and around the clock when required, to ensure that the work operations run smoothly while minimizing the impacts across the area.

    - Overnight from Tuesday, April 16 to Wednesday, April 17, 2019, from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

    Zones concerned

    • Rue Sainte-Catherine Ouest, between Rue City Councillors and Rue De Bleury
    • Rue Mayor, between Rue De Bleury and Rue Saint-Alexandre
    • Rue Saint-Alexandre, between Rue Mayor and Boulevard René-Lévesque

** Door hangers will be placed 48 hours in advance to notify building occupants.**

    Nature of the work

A water service interruption in low- and high-pressure water mains is required for the commissioning of new water mains as part of the reconstruction of the water supply system.

    Impacts

Colour of the water: The interruption and resumption of water service could cause the water to become reddish in colour. This colour does not pose a health risk.

What to do in case of reddish water

Reddish water may cause certain inconveniences, such as stains on fabrics that have been washed. To avoid any damage, the municipal administration advises residents to check the water colour before using the washing machine or any other appliance that uses water. If the water is reddish in colour, let the cold water run for a few minutes until it is clear again.
