What are the main features of the Lachine waterfront park project?

Located along the Lachine waterfront and René-Lévesque Park, this new park is a major environmental remediation project and a concrete step in the City’s ecological transition. With this park, the City wishes to make accessible to the general public a new and emblematic waterfront destination that highlights the shoreline and Montréal’s distinctive character as an island. This large waterfront park, open year-round and accessible to all, will provide the Montréal public with access to the water in a safe environment for non-motorized aquatic activities.

Why another waterfront park when there are already several nearby in the borough, such as René-Lévesque Park and Promenade Père-Marquette?

The goal is to design a water-oriented nature park that offers innovative, four-season programming and complements what is available in the surrounding parks. With its strategic location and non-motorized aquatic activities, this new park will certainly be distinctive from the existing parks.

Why close a marina when boating has been an important element in the development of the area? How will the marina’s history be preserved and enhanced?

Boating is a key element in the development and landscape of Lachine. The project aims to diversify the opportunities for contact with the water by offering an expanded aquatic program. The City wishes to create an inclusive, pleasant, and safe environment to promote the practice of water-oriented activities for the entire population.

What is the timetable for the project and what are its main stages?

A citizen participation process to be held this summer will first identify the public’s priorities regarding the facilities and activities to be offered at the site. Environmental impact studies will then have to be carried out, as well as civil engineering work. It should be possible to start the park development work as early as 2025.

What is the purpose of this citizen participation process?

Now that the vocation and vision for this new Lachine waterfront park have been established, the Ville de Montréal wishes to engage the public in helping to set priorities in terms of its design, facilities, and programming.

Would it be possible to have a mixed project that would enable a certain number of moorings for pleasure craft to be kept?

A mixed-use would be difficult because the site is very narrow and the infrastructure needs of the marina are high. This would leave little remaining space for other uses and would raise issues of safety, coexistence and access control. The City wants the whole community to be able to benefit from the site, in the same way as the municipal libraries and other parks.

Will we have access to the site until the development is completed?

The Borough of Lachine plans to offer a series of temporary activities and facilities this summer. Montrealers will be invited to enjoy the site through a program of temporary activities that will reflect the features of this remarkable site. However, for safety reasons, all or part of the site will be inaccessible during the work.

Will the future waterfront park and its programming be accessible year-round?

Yes, the site will be accessible year-round, just like the other major parks in Montréal. A four-season program will offer summer and winter activities. The citizen participation process currently underway will also gather suggestions to this effect.

What activities will be offered at this new park?

The current citizen participation process will identify the needs and priorities of the population.

Will access to the site be free? Will there be fees for some activities or services?

One of the main objectives of the project is to provide the entire community with public access to the waterfront. Entry to the site will be free of charge, although there may be fees for rental of certain equipment (e.g., kayaks, paddleboards, etc.).
