The Arrondissement de Ville-Marie is undergoing a consultation process for the future of Montreal’s Chinatown:

General objective: Build a common vision of development of Chinatown.

  • Pre-consultation — Specify the objectives and activities of the consultation process in cooperation with actors in Chinatown (Spring 2019)

  • Phase 1—Produce a diagnostic profile of the issues and needs of the community (July to December 2019)

  • Phase 2—Formulate an action plan (in progress)


Summary report of the needs and expectations of the community

During the Summer and Fall of 2019, six participative activities with the public as well as several meetings with a Chinatown advisory committee made up of local actors helped produce a situational diagnostic of the needs and expectations of the community.

Action plan

Based on the results of phase 1, phase 2 aims to establish an action plan for Chinatown.

Three working committees composed of citizens, organisations and experts will be created to allow an in-depth exploration of the issues and needs of the community identified in phase 1 as well as suggest short, medium—and long-term development actions for Chinatown:

  • Identity and outreach (institutions to spread Chinese culture and cultural programming)

  • Commercial vitality (local economic development and main street revitalization)

  • Quality of life (sports, leisure and social services)

    Bringing newcomers to establish to their new home and create vibrant city

    Coming from Baltimore, I visit my eldest uncle who lives nearby. It is the home he only knows and him and his wife are able to freely walk to nearby shops and interact with familiar faces. Younger generations like me come to visit them, shop or eat at any of the restaurants or bubble tea spots. Some might ever start up their own business there.

    I met some wonderful people there. I fell in love while traveling there and we enjoyed and created wonderful memories on Chinatown that we'll never forget. I hope it stays and even improve the neighborhood... Continue reading
