A unique electoral structure

Since 2009, the electoral structure of the borough council of Ville-Marie differs from that of other boroughs. When the mayor of Montréal is elected, they automatically have the responsibility of heading the borough of Ville-Marie. To support the mayor in this role, two people are chosen from among all the councillors on City council to sit on the borough council. The borough works this way because of its unique status as the home of downtown Montréal.

To enrich the evaluation of a possible transformation of Ville-Marie’s electoral structure, the Institut du Nouveau Monde (INM), an independent and non-partisan organization, was commissioned to organize and lead a public consultation process with the people of the borough of Ville-Marie.
